The Department of English Language, Literature and Linguistics is the oldest department at Providence University. Full time professors of the department have graduated from several well-known universities and have designed excellent curricula.

They have taken every measure to ensure that each student has the best opportunities to develop solid English skills and research abilities, knowledge of interpretation, linguistics, and translation, as well as an understanding of Western culture and teaching techniques. Graduates of the department usually have many job opportunities in Taiwan and abroad.

The department sponsors exciting composition, news, song and speech contests as well as an annual English Festival. In addition, students have ample opportunity to develop their leadership skills by joining the Student Association. The association is comprised of eight divisions: 1.) Academics; 2.) Activities; 3.) Athletics; 4.) Documents; 5.) Drama; 6.) Public Relations; 7.) Publicity and 8.) Student Services.

Research Focus:

*Student Exchange Program The Department of English Language, Literature and Linguistics has implemented an Exchange Student Program with more than 70 colleges worldwide. Juniors can apply for this program and study abroad for one year. Credits taken in the college can be listed as Providence graduation credits and students do not have to delay their graduation. Some students from these foreign schools also come to study Chinese Language and Culture in our Mandarin Center. Students can also apply for the exchange program of Kagoshima Immaculate Heart University (Japan) and study Japanese there for one year.

*Student Activities Competitive activities such as the English Composition Contest, the News in English Contest, Drama Contest, English Speech, and English Song Contest are sponsored regularly by the Department in order to motivate peer-learning. Academic activities such as the Renaissance Festival and an English Summer Camp are also held regularly.

The student association is the highest student authority of the Department of English Language, Literature and Linguistics. There are eight sections in this association: Document Editing, Academic Development, Drama, Activities, Publicity, Athletics, Student Service, and Public Relations. The association is in charge of both intramural and extramural activities, including a camping trip and a party to welcome incoming freshmen.

*Literature Association "Providence University Literature Association" (PULA) was organized by the graduate students of the English Language, Literature, and Linguistics Department and was founded on December 19, 2002. The society runs affairs via 5 sections of Academic, Administrating, Publishing, Public Relations, and General Affairs. It aims to elevate the passion and atmosphere in studying all fields of British and English Literature within Providence University, including the study of Literary Theory and Criticism, Post-colonialism, Culture and Gender Study, Film Theory, Mythology, Legend, Comparative Literature, Science Fiction, Detective Story, Drama, Children and Young Adult Literature, The Seventeenth Century to the Nineteenth Century English Literature, Bible as Literature, Culture and Networks, etc.. Also, the society eagerly invites respectable professors and scholars with specialty in particular fields from other universities to deliver speeches at Providence University. Thus, it promotes academic activities and interflow, connecting with British and American Literature trends, and arouses more literary discussions and creativity.

*Linguistics Association Linguistics Association is organized by graduate students of the department of English Language, Literature and Linguistics in the year of 2002. The aim of the association is to promote the study and research in various fields of linguistics and to further the interests of students in both core areas of linguistics: phonetics, phonology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, morphology, and applied branches of linguistics, including, sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, historical linguistics, language acquisition and language teaching.

*English Teaching Association English Teaching Association is organized by graduate students of the department of English Language, Literature and Linguistics in the year of 2005. The aim of the association is to promote the study and research in various fields of TESOL and to further the interests of students in both theory and practice: Second Language Acquisition, Material Design and Teaching Methodology, Language Assessment, Qualitative Research Method, Research Design and Statistics for Applied Linguistics, Bibliography and English Writing, English for Academic Purpose (EAP), Studies in English Pedagogical Grammar, Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL), Affective Factors in Second Language Acquisition, Austronesian Linguistics, English Interlanguage Variance, Sociolinguistics.
