The Spanish language is spoken by nearly 500 million in 5 continents íV it is the second most widely spoken language by native speakers, as well as the second most influential language in economic terms. It is an official language in Europe (Spain, Andorra and Gibraltar), America (Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Puerto Rico, Uruguay, and Venezuela), Africa (Equatorial Guinea, Western Sahara). It is a minority language in the Philippines and the Pacific (Guam, Micronesia, Mariana Islands, Marshall Islands, and Palau). It is also the second language in Belize, Canada and Brazil, and the USA, with some 45 million speakers and large Spanish-language populations in Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, and Texas.
Spanish is an official language of many international organizations, for instance, the African Union, the Antarctic Treaty, the European Union, the North American Free Trade Agreement, the Organization of American States, the Organization of Ibero-American States, the United Nations, and the Union of South American Nations. The Spanish language is regulated by the Association of Spanish Language Academies, which involves national academies from 22 countries íV the oldest founded in 1713, and the most recent (USA) established in 1973.
The Department of Spanish Language and Literature officially became a department in 1990. However, Spanish language and literature for undergraduates has been taught at Providence University since 1983. In 1999, a MasteríŽs Program was successfully launched. The highest standards are reflected in the faculty, curricula, and hardware and software facilities due to the efforts of everyone in the department.
Taiwan is a member of the WTO (World Trade Organization) and is a major player in the global community. Many of the countries that have diplomatic relations with Taiwan are Spanish-speaking and the number of domestic industries investing in Latin America has increased every year. Corresponding to this urgent need of the Taiwanese government, private organizations and other countries for Spanish-speaking professionals, our objective is to train students to be proficient in Spanish.
