Introduction
Providence University (PU) is a Catholic university and it has the common objective, as any other Catholic education institution, to reinforce ¡§a Holistic Formation¡¨ and ¡§the Search for Truth¡¨. Catholic universities have many different goals in terms of coverage and towards education but the two most important goals are to inculcate ¡§excellent academic knowledge¡¨ and ¡§responsibility to society¡¨ to students. Our university¡¦s motto and spirit, ¡§Virtus cum Scientia¡¨ (Virtue with Knowledge)¡¨, is similar to these goals.
We know that inculcating ¡§excellent academic knowledge¡¨ in our students is the foundation of any university education, however we at PU takes a step further to ensure that our students understand the meaning of his or her life, our students are aware that each of them has their own responsibility and mission in society. Catholic university students need to be made aware that each and every one of them ¡§are born to be good at something¡¨, they strive to discover and fulfill their destiny, and play a contributing role in society and the entire human race. In other words, PU places an emphasis on inculcating our students the right life values while providing them with richer, broader knowledge and learning spaces so that they become ¡§knowledge workers with social responsibility¡¨. This is especially important in today¡¦s environment of very competitive higher education and confused values. PU holds true to the notion of why Catholic universities are founded, we aim to lead the higher education sphere in Taiwan to become a country that is moving towards excellent moral and skill development.
