A Popular Novelist, Lee Chao, Visits Providence University.

Mr. Lee Chao, one of the greatest writers on the history of Taiwanese literature, gave an inspiring talk to students and faculty on his early life experiences, his acquisition of knowledge and his love of books. He shared his growing up as a poor and very sickly child. He told how having almost died twice in his childhood and, as a Han living with aborigines, empowered  him to integrate life, religion and literature in his literary work. The students and teachers of the Department of Taiwanese Literature   re-wrote and acted out one of his novels, “Lan Cai Xia’s Spring”. Lee and the audience were very impressed with the presentation. Lee’s literary works deeply portray Taiwanese cultural, historical and societal problems, realistically raising consciousness of  modern Taiwan.  His “Han Ye San Bu Qu” and other books are popular around the world.

Lee encouraged students to discover their infinite possibilities and to look for the best possibility to work on.  Knowledge of at least one foreign language, social and natural sciences, understanding literary theory, creativity, and a dreamy environment, to name a few, are all important for a positive influence in pursuing one’s  literary skills.

Mr. Lee Chao was honored with a plaque of appreciation presented by Providence University President, Matthew Min-Teh Yu.
